The PhD by Research via Distance Learning

The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) by Research is the only doctorate that can be done in distance learning without the support of academic facilities and without on-campus attendance. In fact, its structure is based on theoretical research, which, of course, can be done from anywhere in the world; classroom or laboratory attendance is not required, only the student's commitment and willpower to engage in research are necessary.

Internationally, there are different types of doctorates. The D.S. (Doctor of Science), for example, is the consequence of research based primarily on laboratory work or empirical investigation; its conclusions are also published in a thesis. Then, there are other professional doctorates such as M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) or J.D. (Juris Doctor) which are obtained only after successfully completing several years of professional practice among other requirements.

The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) by Research is the only doctoral degree that can be obtained through distance learning, because of its nature: it consists in a theoretical study to be implemented in a dissertation on a given area of knowledge. The structure of the dissertation is traditional. It usually consists of an introductory part listing purpose, background of the study, research questions, research methodology and objectives. This is followed by the chapters and case study (when provided), conclusions and bibliography. It should be clear enough that any laboratory work or professional practice cannot be carried out in Distance Learning; therefore, no other type of doctoral degree can be issued by distance universities except PhD by Research.
